2014 Crews are Full! Request your spots for 2015! Individual Scouts Can Participate in a Provisional Crew! Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America's oldest national high-adventure base. It covers 137,000 acres - about 214 square miles - of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. Its 34 staffed camps and 55 trail camps provide an unforgettable adventure in the high country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails. Philmont has high mountains dominating rough terrain with elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,441 feet. Since Philmont's first camping season in 1939, more than 820,000 Scouts, Venturers, and their leaders have participated in the rugged challenge of its backpacking program. Discover Scouting’s Paradise Philmont's signature program is the High-Adventure Expedition. Each expedition provides opportunities for participants to: •Experience the thrill of climbing mountains over two miles high. •Participate in a wide array of activities that teach Scouting skills—archaeology, backpacking, camping, climbing, fishing, forestry, horsemanship, Indian lore, and much more. •Develop leadership, group dynamics, wilderness problem-solving, and outdoor skills. Who May Attend? Scouts and Venturers can participate on their own through a provisional crew or as a larger unit. Scouts must be at least 14 years old by January 1 of the year they will be attending or have completed the 8th grade and be at least 13 years old prior to participation. Each crew must have at least seven and no more than 12 members, which must include at least two (but no more than four) adult advisers, one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, and the remainder of whom must be at least 18 years of age. Crews may be drawn from a single unit, or may be composed of members of different units within the council.
