LENAPEHOKING LODGE IX UNIT OA ELECTIONS

The Order of the Arrow is a youth run organization, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. The purposes of the Order are to recognize those campers– Scouts and Scouters – who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their everyday lives and, by such recognition, cause other campers to conduct themselves in such a manner as to warrant recognition; to develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit; to promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of a unit’s camping program, both year-round and in a summer camp; and, to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

REQUESTING AN ELECTION

Lenapehoking Lodge accepts election requests for eligible youth from Northern New Jersey Council Scouts BSA Troops, Venture Crews, and Sea Scout Ships using the form located here

Adults (age 21 or older) who meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to and approval by the lodge adult selection committee. The form for adult nominations to Lenapehoking IX can be found here.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ELECTION (YOUTH)

Each year, the Lodge seeks eligible candidates for our Order from amongst the units within our Council. Scouts from Council Scouts BSA Troops, Venture Crews, and Sea Scout Ships meeting the minimum requirements set forth by the Order of the Arrow National Board can stand for election by their peers within their units.

Unit elections to Lenapehoking IX will be permitted in Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scout units. The new Order of the Arrow membership requirements are as follows:

  • Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Have experienced 15 nights of camping while registered with a troop, crew, or ship within the two years immediately prior to the election. The 15 nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of at least five consecutive nights of overnight camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Only five nights of the long-term camp may be credited toward the 15-night camping requirement; the balance of the camping (10 nights) must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps of, at most, three nights each. Ship nights may be counted as camping for Sea Scouts.
  • At the time of their election, youth must be under the age of 21, hold the Scouts BSA First Class rank, the Venturing Discovery Award, or the Sea Scout Ordinary rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor or Sea Scout Skipper, be elected by the youth members of their unit.

To be valid elections must be led by a Lodge sanctioned election team from outside the unit. Elections are coordinated and scheduled by a youth member of your local chapter (district) and are held at a unit meeting only.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ELECTION (ADULTS)

Each year, upon holding a troop or team election for youth candidates that results in at least one youth candidate being elected, the unit committee may nominate registered unit adults (age 21 or over) to the lodge adult selection committee. The number of adults nominated can be no more than one-third of the number of youth candidates elected, rounded up where the number of youth candidates is not a multiple of three. In addition to the one-third limit, the unit committee may nominate the currently-serving unit leader (but not assistant leaders), as long as he or she has served as unit leader for at least the previous 12 months. Recommendations of the adult selection committee, with the approval of the Scout executive, serving as Supreme Chief of the Fire, will be candidates for induction, provided all conditions are fulfilled.

The camping requirement set forth for youth candidates must be fulfilled by adults for them to be considered. To be eligible, the adult must have completed 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to nomination. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the BSA. The balance must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps. Include above the dates and location of the resident camping experience.
