Procedures for Scouts and Counselors
Remember, Youth Protection rules apply to video conferencing, email communications, telephone communications and even written Communications through the mail. All communications should include the Scout, Scout’s Parent(s), Unit Leader, and Merit Badge Counselor.
Scouts should have your blue card for your merit badge approved by your Scoutmaster or unit leader before contacting any merit badge counselor. Merit Badge Counselors should confirm the Scout has approval to work on the merit badge before starting.
Requirements can be approved by the Merit Badge Counselor (MBC) by email. The email should list the specific requirements completed and the date of completion, as well as having the counselors Name and Contact information in the signature. Scouts can keep track by attaching all the emails accumulated during the process to the Blue Card.
Follow all the rules according to the Guide for Merit Badge Counselors
- If the requirement says to do or demonstrate or show the scout must do or demonstrate or show. This may mean that some requirements may not be possible in a virtual setting. Or it may be possible to achieve this requirement by video. This is in the discretion of the counselor.
- All requirements must be met as written, nothing more, nothing less.
