Campership

Summer camp is more than fun for Scouts. It instills self-confidence in a child through challenging activities, new experiences, and developing relationships with others.

Many families need financial support to send their Scout to camp. To assist these families the Northern New Jersey Council has established a Campership Fund. Giving kids the opportunity to get out into nature is an incredible gift. You can make a Scout’s dream come true with a Campership Fund contribution.

“I remember my first day of camp. I was nervous and excited! The nerves didn’t last long but the excitement did. Every day was a new adventure! We cooked, sang and swam together and even had some friendly competitions. When I look back at my childhood, some of my best memories come from my days at camp.”

Camp Capital

The Northern New Jersey Council Operates five summer camps. Two Scout BSA Resident Camps, No-Be-Bo-Sco and Turrell, one Scouts BSA Trekking Camps, Floodwood Mountain Reservation, and one Resident Camp, Lewis and one Cub Day Camp, Yaw Paw. Our camps have thousands of day campers, troop overnights, council activities and training throughout the year.

It costs more than $500 per day to cover the cost of upkeep, upgrades safety equipment and much more. The needed repairs, additions and modernization ensure the safety and comfort of our campers.

Contact Jennifer Tanis, Director of Development, at Jennifer.tanis@scouting.org or 201-677-1000 ex 51, to learn how your company or foundation can invest in the youth of  Northern New Jersey Council.

The Northern New Jersey Council provides the expertise, structure, mentorship, and resources to support youth throughout their Scouting experience. Our local council is funded by a variety of sources, including direct contributions, estate planning, endowment, events, foundation grants, matching gifts, program partners, annual popcorn sale, and program/activity/camping fees. With your support, the Northern New Jersey Council can bring the nation’s highest quality Scouting programs to many more youth.

Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is the annual giving campaign of the Northern New Jersey Council. NNJC invests $365 per Scout yearly to provide enriching and safe experiences for all the youth we serve. The actual cost of Scouting is much greater than local dues, camping and event fees cover. We are grateful for our Scout families and friends who contribute to help offset costs to ensure we deliver a meaningful and impactful Scouting program.

“My project benefited the charity Backpacks for Life, which provides survival backpacks to homeless and at-risk Veterans. I went into the project knowing I can’t help everyone, but I wanted to make a difference for as many as possible as I could.”

Nick set a goal to donate 50 backpacks containing 31 survival items. With the support of volunteers from his troop and community, Nick surpassed his goal and distributed 150 fully stocked backs to Veterans and donated 2,677 survivals items and donated to the organization.

Your generosity supports more than 13,000 youth in Scouting in the Northern New Jersey Council. You are making a difference by embracing values that develop character and make a positive impact in our communities.  View Northern New Jersey Council’s 2020 Annual Report.

Matching Gifts

Often corporations sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by employees to their non-profit of their choice.  To learn more, contact your Human Resources Department or visit Matching Gifts

Friends of Scouting

Thank you for your commitment to Scouting! Your generosity supports local Scouting initiatives, programs and camps right here in the Northern New Jersey Council. The Friends of Scouting program has helped us deliver Scouting to more than 15,000 youth this past year. We are making a difference by embracing traditional values that develop character and make a positive impact in our communities.

Everyday we hear stories from Scouts like Danny. “I am so glad to be a Scout. I have done so many amazing things from building my own pine wood derby car, to the day I bridged to Scout’s BSA and to meeting mentors in my field of interest through Exploring. All these experiences allowed me to build my confidence and leadership skills, so I can be an influential and productive member of society. I know I will be Prepared. For Life.”

The Northern New Jersey Council invests $365 per Scout yearly to provide enriching and safe experiences, training to our volunteers, expanding programs and supporting the needs of our members. We create memorable life experiences that instill important values, principles and skills to develop the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow. We can do this because of supporters like you!

Endowments

Gifts to our endowment fund help ensure that we can continue to offer outstanding programs and services in perpetuity. With your help Scouting in Northern New Jersey will remain strong and vibrant, and meet the needs of the youth and communities we serve today.

In its gratitude for such support, the Northern New Jersey Council, Boy Scouts of America offers four distinct endowment recognition awards. These awards are presented at local events that the Northern New Jersey Council conducts.

James E West Fellow

The James E. West Fellowship award is available for gifts of $1,000 and up in cash or marketable securities to our Council endowment fund.

The gift must be in addition to and not replace or diminish the donor’s annual Friends of Scouting support. Many individuals and corporation make these gifts either on behalf of someone else such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, a special accomplishment, or anniversary or in memory of a special individual. A James E. West Fellowship Award can be cumulative to reach Silver, Gold, and Diamond levels.

Major Gifts and Scouting

Annual gifts, product sales, and special events are important, but they only sustain a council’s current needs. For major growth, Scouting needs major gifts. They are critical to Scouting’s future, whether current or deferred, general or specific; for local, national, or international use; and for operating, capital, or endowment.

Major Gifts are needed for innovative growth, and are critical to Scouting’s future, whether current or deferred, general or specific; for local, national, or international use; and for operating, capital, or endowment.

We believe that major gifts, those of $25,000 and more, are worthy of recognition at a national level. Besides monetary gifts, we also recognize gifts such as:

  • Stocks, bonds, real estate, other non-cash assets, charitable income trusts and gift annuities
  • Bequests, pledges, IRAs and insurance designations
  • Donor-advised funds to benefit Scouting and even some organizations outside of Scouting such as universities, schools, medical charities and more
  • New scholarships, camperships, or designated funds for specific councils, projects or geographical areas
  • Gifts to support specific Scouting projects, funds, and initiatives such as innovation, STEM or conservation/ sustainability

Second Century Society

The Second Century Society, SCS, is the Boy Scouts of America’s national social organization of individuals, families, foundations, and corporations stewarded by key volunteers and implemented by the Boy Scouts of America National Foundation. Established in 2011, SCS, replaces the 1910 Society and Founders Circle as the way to recognize Scouting’s major donors at both the local and national levels.   Qualifying gifts to be recognized as a Second Century Society member have a broader definition than Scouting’s major gift recognition in the past.  These gifts include an outright gift of $25,000 or more payable over five years, or a deferred gift of $100,000 or more to a local council, the Boy Scouts of America Foundation, high-adventure base or any Scouting entity for operating, capital, or endowment.

Any donor who is recognized as a Second Century Society member is awarded a certificate and given a lapel pin indicating their level of support.

Presidents Leadership Council

The Presidents Leadership Council provides an opportunity for Scouting’s most generous donors to provide input, ideas and suggestions for the BSA’s fundraising priorities. We are grateful to our donors and work to build lasting relationships with them through fellowship trips, personal stewardship, customized recognition and opportunities for access.

  • Qualifying gifts may be paid to or through the BSA Foundation over a five-year period.
  • Gifts may be designated to any and all BSA entities and initiatives, local or national, as selected by the donor.

A gift of $1,000,000 or more qualifies for inclusion in the Boy Scouts of America’s Presidents Leadership Council (PLC), Scouting’s premiere donor society.  PLC members are an esteemed group of visionary philanthropists who have demonstrated exemplary service to America’s youth.  As a PLC member, you can receive invitations to exclusive domestic and international donor events hosted by the BSA National Foundation.

If you would like to find out more about solutions for your particular estate planning needs, our gift recognition program or about our Council Endowment Fund, contact e-mail is Jennifer.Tanis@Scouting.org or call 201-677-1000.
